Berczy Burying Ground

This pastoral spot in the heart of Unionville is the resting ground for a substantial number of descendants of the Berczy settlers, the founding families of Markham. Heritage plaques commemorate the Berczys and their history.

Eckhardt-McKay House

Once the home of Salem Eckhardt and his son, Andrew, who were involved in the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion, this newly renovated building now houses the Kathleen Gormley McKay Art Centre. The house and surroundings were inspirational to Group of Seven artist F.H. Varley, who lived here the last 13 years of his life.

Heintzman House

Built in 1816, this Regency home, a favourite venue for weddings, has Classic Revival features. Parts of the original two-room adobe brick structure, built before 1802, remain within the present house. View the latest renovations, made during the past winter.

Markham Civic Centre

Markham’s town hall was completed in spring 1991 as part of the Anthony Roman Centre. Note the two wings, one for the service side of the town’s responsibilities, with entrances named for some of the villages that constitute present-day Markham, and the administrative wing, which includes the mayor’s and councillors’ offices and the large council chamber.

Heritage Estates, unique in North America, is a sanctuary of last resort for threatened historic houses. Created by the Town of Markham, the neighbourhood includes more than 25 lovingly restored, privately owned heritage homes. Guided tours are available both days. Thornhill Village Library

This 1851 library, originally a house, is considered a unique example of the Classical Revival style. The building was restored in the 1970s under the direction of architect Napier Simpson. Don’t miss the beautiful heritage garden on the grounds, designed and maintained by Professor Richard Jarrell, and featuring a variety of heritage plants.

Step inside this 135-year-old Grand Trunk Railway station and relive a little piece of Ontario’s, and Unionville’s, rail history. You will find the bustling interior filled with photographic displays. To top it off, take a train ride to Markham Village and back!
